Oct 15 reading summary: Dada
during the start of the first world war, artists fled to other countries where they would be safe during the war. since the world at that point made no sense to them, they would make no sense, they would meet and start chopping up words to make incomprehensible lines of sounds
color theory reading assignment
Color
Color theory is the art and science of color interaction and effects. In Tile Art of Color,' Johannes ltten lists the following approaches to color theory
studies the expressive effects ofcolor on our mind and spirit.
Additive color is created using beams of light (2.2A). Red, green, and blue, the familiar RGB on a computer screen, are the primary colors in this system. Many additional colors can be mixed from these primaries. Subtractive color is created when white light is reflected off a pigmented or dyed sur- face (2.2B). The subtractive primaries are blue, red, and yellow.
Our perception of additive color is influenced by The intensity (or wattage) of the projected light.
The light source, from incandescent light and fluorescent light to daylight.
The surface quality of the illuminated object. Projected light behaves very differently on transparent, translucent, and textured surfaces.
The ambient (overall amount of) light in the environment.
mono- chromatic color scheme (2.29). The advantage of this system is a high level of unityAdjacent colors on the color wheel are used III an analogous color schemecomple- mentary color scheme (2.33). Complementary colors are opposites on the traditional color wheel. split complementary color scheme (2.35). Rather than pair colors that are in opposite posi- tions on the color wheel, triadic color scheme pushes the choices even farther apart, so that they are now located in a triangu- lar position, equally spaced around the wheelA chromatic gray is made from a mixture of various hues, rather than a simple blend of black and white. Earth colors, including raw si- enna and burnt sienna, raw and burnt umber, and yellow ochre, are made generally from pigments found in soil.

balance reading summary
as humans we feel the need for balance and symmetry, we our selfs are almost symmetrical. symmetry and asymmetry can be achieved through value and hue, and the position of certain elements. even the way objects within the image can lead our eye such as a person looking in a certain direction or someone pointing can change the symmetry of the image. radial balance is very common in nature but not as common in graphic arts. crystallographic balance is very scattered and appear chaotic and fractured that lead your eye everywhere and nowhere.

The Principles of organization harmony and contrast reading summary
The development of form uses the elements of art which are organized according to harmony and contrast creating space and visual unity.
Harmony is a relationship of different parts of a composition that have characteristics of common colour texture shared edges and cohesion relating eh various parts of the composition to each other.
likeness of direction and type
Contrast is wherever elements of opposing characteristics are placed within the same area that makes them appear unrelated.

Final Pieces and Critique
My group was quite surprised when they found out that the boxes were actually raised off the page by stacked newspaper all glued together. My group really liked how the boxes descended in hight as they were closer to the center of the background. although they thought it was weird that the second tallest square was smaller than the third smallest, but that was like that in the original composition. Other than that they would have liked to see the smallest square actually raised off the page, and the edges of the background to be more crisp because they were a little rough.
Playful and Periodic Critique
I really loved the imbalance that my playful composition created, the sense that the boxes could fall over at any minute. I also saw that the composition created line of continuance that followed the boxes around. although I really liked my playful composition, I found that my periodic composition was lacking something, weather that there was too much empty space or still wanting to add another box at the end of the row, I had intended to create tension with the boxes being so close and orderly and having a lot of empty space, but maybe it was too much empty space in the long run.
dot dot dot critique
My group found it fairly easy to distinguish between the different principles of gestalt within my four compositions. Although my group didn't like how much empty space I had left in my proximity composition. Even though I used lots of space to create tension, I didn't use enough space to really fill the composition, and it ended up being more distracting to the actual piece. My group did however like how I create tension and they said that it was the strongest of the four principles for me. aside from that my group liked how I used each principle of gestalt.
