Friday 8/27/2010 Lecture Summary

Composition
What is composition? as we learned in class on Friday, composition is really everything created by us. It can be mineral composition, writing, music, and visual. Then we broke down the composition of art into categories of Point, Line, Shape/Form, Color/Hue, Texture, Space, and Value/Shade.

The Whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Gestalt meaning the whole basically boiled down to how people view things such as when a person walks into a classroom they instantly think that it's a classroom because of all the components that make up the room as a whole. No one sits there and thinks about each individual piece or object in the room to figure out that the room is in fact a classroom.

Gestalt has four basic principles; proximity, similarity, continuance, and closure. Each one of these can change how a person views art.

Wednesdays newspaper design

Walking in on the first day of class I didn't really know what to expect, but from my prior class I kind of guessed we would be reviewing the syllabus and not a whole lot more. I was quite wrong, but I was glad that I was, seeing that this was an art class I was hoping for something creative. Having to construct a structure to hold a cinder block's weight on out of newspaper was so creative it was sort of weird, but fun never the less. I felt like Adam and Jamie from "Mythbusters" having to create some device with limited material. Overall my first day of W.A.S.H. was interesting yet awesome.
